Our Farmers: Peter Brown, Lamb Farmer from Casino, NSW

Seven years on, and still doing things the right way.
When we think about how far Our Cow has come, there are a handful of people who immediately come to mind. Farmers who took a chance on something new before it was proven, before it was easy, and before anyone knew what it might become.
Lamb Farmer Peter Brown is one of those people.
We first met Peter nearly seven years ago at an agricultural field day in Casino, NSW. Dave and I were standing there in our green shirts, cooking sausages and trying to explain this idea we had. Selling meat directly to Aussie families, cutting out the middlemen, and giving farmers a fairer, more reliable way to sell their livestock.
Dave and Pete got chatting (they both love a good yarn), and about two hours later, we had our very first sheep farmer on board.
From the early days to now
Peter has watched Our Cow grow from just the two of us with a plate of sausages and big ideas to what it is today.
He runs one of the most impressive and productive farms on the North Coast of NSW, with a strong focus on pasture management, animal welfare, and producing high-quality lamb the right way.
His background includes many years with the Department of Primary Industries, and today he lectures at Southern Cross University, teaching agricultural students who will shape the future of Australian farming.
Every time we visit Peter’s farm, we learn something new. About pasture, about livestock, and about what good farming really looks like when it’s done with care and long-term thinking.
Why Peter chose to stick with Our Cow
Over the years, Peter has seen firsthand how volatile traditional livestock markets can be. Prices rising and falling, overseas influences, and very little certainty for farmers trying to plan ahead.
Being part of Our Cow changed that.
As Peter explains it:
“For me, it means that my income’s basically guaranteed. I’m not a victim of what may happen in Australia as far as pricing or overseas markets. I stand totally away from all that stuff.
I’m just dealing with you guys. I haven’t had a failure. I’m happy with the prices I get. It’s an absolute pleasure to be involved right from the beginning.”
That stability matters. It allows farmers like Peter to focus on doing what they do best, caring for their land, their animals, and producing food they’re proud of.
Feeding Aussies, not export markets
Peter’s often spoken about how important it was to him that his lamb ended up on Australian dinner tables.
“If we can provide that to Australian people rather than export it, that’s where we want to be.”
That belief still sits at the heart of what he does.
Peter has always backed the idea that everyday Australians, many of them living in cities, can drive positive change in agriculture through their food choices. Choosing where you buy your meat from can shape the future of farming in this country.
When you buy through Our Cow, you’re not just buying good-quality meat. You’re helping farmers like Peter plan ahead with confidence, regardless of weather events or global market pressures.
Seven years ago, Peter wasn’t sure how it would all work out
Looking back, Peter once admitted he thought our idea might never work.
“I was stunned when they tried to go up against the physical and online saleyards. I thought it was suicide because you can’t compete in a marketplace that’s set up the way it is in the Australian beef industry. I'm so happy to be proven wrong!"
Seven years on, we’re proud to still be working alongside Peter, and grateful for the trust he placed in us all those years ago.
He raises the bar for the farmers we work with, and reminds us exactly why we started Our Cow in the first place.
